  1. Steve

We know a couple, Greg and Lisa who are your worst nightmare to go to a restaurant with. It has gotten to the point that we will only go to restaurants that we don’t care about, which is now down to only two.

A typical night with them has Greg barking at the waiter: “I want to get two bread baskets, olive oil, and we’ll take a bottle of sparkling water . . . . PLEASE!” (as if the please offsets the authoritative demands). I forgot. The waiter is two tables away helpng someone else while Greg is barking his order.

This goes on throughout the meal with a variety of demands and complaints – always ending with “PLEASE.”

Anything that is free they demand in multiples (“Gimme more salad – IF you don’t mind – PLEASE!”).

If they made a mistake in ordering they blame it on the waiter (“I asked for no croutons in my salad – why are there croutons? – do you know how to get an order right?”). When the waiter retorts that they did not make that request, Lisa looks at us for confirmation of the request. I’ve gotten to the point where I side with the waiter so maybe they stop.

And, of course, nothing is done discreetly. They are loud and boistrous in their demands.

Mary Lou here: If I were you, I’d either dump the rude Greg and Lisa as dinnermates or have them over for takeout and let them place (and pay!) for the order online. Interesting to see if they blame themselves for missing items when the record shows the truth…or if they ‘over-order’ when they have to pay for all their extras. If I were me (whoops, I am!), I’d make friends with the waiter…after all, you’re running out of restaurants.

  3. Amy

Borrowing these beautiful words from Geneen Roth writing for Oprah.com, which seem fitting for the diet talk…

“Rather than focusing on dieting and depriving yourself, which we all know does not work, turn your attention to what you love. Because if you love your life, you want to take care of your body. Even if you knew you only had six months to live, you might eat differently, you might even begin exercising every day, but it wouldn’t be because you were ashamed of your body. It wouldn’t be because your thighs weren’t thin enough or the stitches of your life weren’t good enough. It would be because you didn’t want to miss a minute of the time you had left.”

Perfect quote Amy. I think Geneen has real wisdom when it comes to putting the whole diet ordeal in perspective. Thanks! ~Nancy
